Among mental illnesses, depression is a disorder that is quite common and is the leading cause of functional disability all around the world. The most commonly used treatment option for depression and few other mental health illnesses are counseling therapy also known as psychotherapy and medications and sometimes the combination of both of them too. The percentage of people suffering from depression has increased exponentially in the United States and treatment rates have also risen however significant number of patients who would benefit the most from the treatment won’t avail of the service. Due to this, several people couldn’t get the required treatment which will have consequences in a society having an untreated mental illness. Understanding and acknowledging what is stopping the treatment is important and has been the center of attention for the research these days.

Nowadays, several clinics have been opened all around the world to treat people with mental health issues. Several organizations are sponsoring the treatment of people going through depression and other types of mental health issues. Despite all of these, the causes of mental illnesses are rising which brings us to doubt the reliability of the treatment modalities we are using for depression and other mental health disorders.

Generally, depression is a type of mood disorder that affects us emotionally first and then physically causes its symptoms. Initially, symptoms include lack of concentration, lack of motivation and interest to do anything, changes in appetite and weight, sleep pattern changes. Later on, depression causes us pain in different parts of the body and causes impairment in our daily life activities.

Traditionally, doctors used to prescribe psychotherapy initially for most of the types of mental disorders including depression. If that doesn’t work and the symptoms of the patients persist, then doctors will recommend starting antidepressants and SSRIs and this step-up therapy could lead to using more serious treatment options too.

According to several studies, these medications and treatment options do not have enough positive outcomes and patients with depression did not show improvement in the symptoms despite taking these medicines. This shows that the traditional medication course is efficient for mild and moderate cases of depression only but not in the severe ones

Research has shown that recent advancement has been made in the treatment modalities of mental illnesses among which IV ketamine therapy is the most effective one.
